Dare to become your own 'Carita'

For Hildegard von Bingen, the body was the temple of the divine. Rejecting cruel customs such as self-flagellation and the traditional Christian denial of physical pleasures, she instead advocated wellness for the body and soul and celebrated her femininity as a bride of the Divine. Why cover up and bow your head in shame when divinity itself is your lover?

Once, there was an angel, adorned with bedazzling jewels. His name was Lucifer, and he was the brightest of celestial beings. But when he was cast into hell, his precious stones - bright yellow citrines, glowing amethysts, sparkling sapphires etc. - rained down upon the earth.

Let me dance you a story!

« Let me dance you a story, » you say by placing your hands on your hips*. And so, it begins. Widening your kohl-rimmed eyes, you stretch out your arms, shaking them like feathers. You are a peacock, proud and majestic. You are channeling the shape-shifting magic of Indian dance. With a dramatic twirl and quivering fingers, you begin to change again. Holding our breath, we watch your foot slowly trace a large arc on the floor. Then, in an explosion of energy, you begin stamping both feet, faster and faster, your ankle bells jingling with each move. You are a woman on fire now, a wrathful goddess. You are dancing the divine!

The hidden language of the soul

No music. Just the sound of your breath. As you inhale, you reach up with your hands, your legs rooting downward, your bare feet gripping the earth. As you exhale – aaah! – you release it all in one writhing movement: your shame, fury, passion and lust. You start to dance, twisting and twirling, jumping and stomping, each movement flowing from the rise and fall of your breathing. You are a force of nature. A woman. Let them hear you moan and shout. Let them see you sweat and bleed. Your body is your voice now. And you’ve only just begun to tell your story.

At first, the spotlight blinds you. Then, as the music swells and fills your heart, you start to move towards it, like a flower blooming towards the sun. Dancing with poise, precision and power, you claim and shape the space around you with your arabesques and pirouettes, with the graceful arc of your wrist. Reaching for the sky en pointe, you infuse every moment with meaning and grace. You don’t just hear the music, you feel it. And as the ballet crescendos towards a climax, and you float in the air during the final grand jeté, you realize: you don’t just have a body, you are a body.

Rebel, rebel, kick up your heels and flap your arms! Bouncing to that ragtime rhythm and searing trumpet, you trot like a fox, claiming the room. Why stay on the dancefloor when you can jump on the table? You want it all and you want it fast. Spurred on by the cheers of the crowd, you lift your skirt to show off your undies with a series of high-kicks and shimmies. « Watch me, world! » Twisting faster and faster in a whirlwind of flying fringes, you feel so high. The Charleston is more than a dance; it’s your drug. An addictive taste of freedom.

Give it mambo! » the orchestra leader shouts. As an orgy of trumpets and bongos explodes, you break away from your dance partner and shimmy to the middle of the floor. This is your moment. Surrendering to the Afro-Cuban rhythm, your feet move at a dazzling speed. Channeling your inner Italian vamp, you swing your hips, teasingly tracing your curves with your hands. As you imagine Sophia Loren cheering you on – « Shake your lemons, donna! » – you throw your head back and laugh. No other dance makes you feel this juicy and alive. No other dance makes you fall this crazy in love with yourself. It’s the magic of mambo!

Wearing little more than sequins and feathers, you twirl around like a peacock. All eyes are on you. You are desire. The story behind my care bra for breast cancer survivors

by marlies|dekkers

Breast cancer awareness has always been a cause very close to my heart. And from the beginning of my brand, I have had conversations with breast cancer survivors who told me about their struggles, needs and wishes. Since comfort and support is in the DNA of all my designs, I often received very positive feedback from these women about my collections. But I wanted to know more. A few years ago, after a meeting with renowned surgical oncologist Jean Klinkenbijl, I decided to organize a special get-together for my team and a group of (ex-)breast cancer patients. That evening, I discovered that out of the 15 women present, 14 women had their needs met by my regular designs. Not bad, but not enough for me. I knew what I had to do: design a special prosthetic bra.

8 Must-Have Pieces for your Lingerie Drawer

As a grown woman in my late 20s I have come to realise the importance of a well-stocked, lingerie drawer. It’s not big and overly fancy but does include a few great staples. Everything is well fitting and of course there are some cheeky pieces for those ‘sexy’ days. Here’s my must-have lingerie list:

1. Everyday Glamour (Push Up Dame de Paris)

A great push-up bra ensures my breasts are well supported and lifted each and every day. Take a leaf out of Marlies’ personal book and give the push-up an everyday place in your lingerie closet. Paired with everything in my wardrobe, I love the proportions it gives me! The best-selling Dame de Paris available in three all-occasion colours; black, white and red is my favourite.

 2. Comfort Lingerie

A great ‘natural’ bra with a rounding shape is probably my #1 bra wish. Cue the balcony bra. It works well for just about every type of breast and comfort-wise you won’t go wrong. A balcony-bra with padding gives me extra support for all-day wear and a modest cleavage perfect for under a shirt or high-buttoning blouse (which I wear far too often).

 3. Basic Knickers

In every lingerie drawer there should be a great selection of everyday knickers for you to choose from. If you’re a one-knicker women (I am talking style here) then stock up on those. I love to mix my selection up so you’ll find a few Brazilian slips, strings, Brazilian shorts and hipster knickers in there. To fill up your own knicker drawer, check out our Bottoms Promo!

 4. A Signature Sexy Style

A signature, sexy bra is something that every lingerie drawer screams out for. A Friday at work followed by date night at the hottest new rooftop bar? Simply unbutton a few buttons, add a delicate necklace and a peek of your Spider Bra. Going from day to night in one swift move hasn’t been easier!

 5. An On-Trend Style Set

I adore on-trend pieces of lingerie but tend to limit myself to one style piece per season. Adding colour to my lingerie drawer is especially exciting and I love that I can always trust m|d to create fun new versions of the everyday shapes I know and trust.

 6. Sexy Strings

Lovers of strings are likely to have a drawer full – but rotate wearing only their favourites. Fill your drawer with just your favourites and avoid having to fish out the ‘washing day’ options.

 7. Something Red

This is an obvious one. And oh! So! Sexy!

 8. Your ‘ Underwear as Outerwear’  Body

Want to keep up with the hottest trend in lingerie? A body is the ultimate piece to show off as part of your outfit – not hiding underneath it. Here at m|d our bodies have been given a life of their own at music festivals, dinner parties, red carpet events and even to the office!
