Oh, Milo Manara and his lusty, luscious, long-legged nymphs! I can’t write about this Italian illustrator’s work without blushing and feeling a delicious tickle in my belly. His comics usually revolve around stunning women caught up in weird but wonderful erotic scenarios, like the girl in Butterscotch who is brought to a screaming orgasm in a fancy restaurant by an invisible man.
Wouldn’t you secretly love to be that girl? I would! For that story, Manara came up with a sweet-smelling bodypaint that makes you invisible, but for his other gem, Click, he invented a device which renders women helplessly aroused….with just a click. It goes like this: an attractive but passionless woman is abducted by a scientist and a remote-controlled device is surgically implanted into her brain. Press the button, and she becomes sexually insatiable.
I read Click years ago, and something just ‘clicked’! (sorry, couldn’t help it!) I saw it as an incredibly sexy metaphor for the sexual on/off button we all have in our heads. I was reminded of this when I took part in a tv-debate about the lust pill for women, aka ‘female Viagra’. My stand: if you want to feel sexual but haven’t been able to for whatever reason –hormonal, emotional, physical- why not use a pill to help you find the on/off button in your head?
Of course it isn’t all that simple. Sex is complex. But I believe that lust is an important part of who we are. We don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time, but we should allow ourselves that extra little push we sometimes need to get in the mood. Be it porn, a pill or perhaps just a very naughty Italian cartoon…
