Finally – the Archeologist
“Finally,” the Archaeologist whispered as the most magnificent face she had ever seen emerged from the dust and the darkness, transcending centuries with its golden radiation. Could this really be it? The final resting place of Cleopatra, Goddess Queen of ancient Egypt? All of a sudden, a rustling sound. She didn’t believe in curses, but she knew that this gilded shrine could easily become her own tomb. Without turning around, she placed her hand on her gun.
“I married an archaeologist because the older I grow, the more he appreciates me,” Agatha Christie once jokingly said about her marriage to eminent archaeologist Max Mallowan (he was 13 years her junior). After a devastating divorce, Agatha took a trip to Baghdad – on the Orient Express! – in 1928 and lost her heart to archaeology, the ancient sites of Iraq and to Max, who would become the love of her life. Agatha spent the following two decades living on excavation sites in the Middle East, helping out with Max’s work (she famously used her Innoxa moisturizing face cream to clean and preserve the finds) and writing novels inspired by her adventures, including ‘Death on the Nile’ and ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. It turned out that crime writers and archaeologists are surprisingly alike: combining curiosity with critical thinking skills and wanderlust, they both dig patiently to reveal the shining truth.
