Happy Holidays – ADVENT(UROUS)

Happy Holidays – ADVENT(UROUS)

by marlies|dekkers

Do you remember as a child, excitedly ripping open the first door of your Advent Calendar to get to the scrumptious secret within? Well, I created something for you to regain that delicious excitement… and more!

Confession: I am a total Christmas fanatic. I LIVE for the holiday season: a beautiful period to spoil myself and my loved ones, to let my inner light shine bright. While my usual taste can best be described as austere and intellectual, come the end of November, I’m all about glitter, glühwein and sentimental songs. Yes, you read that right: November! That’s how early I start unpacking my ridiculously big collection of Xmas paraphernalia to turn my house into Santa’s Secret Village.

Why so early? Well, of course I like to stretch my favorite period of the year as much as I can! But it goes deeper than that. Like the French philosopher Albert Camus used to say: ‘We need the sweet pain of anticipation to tell us we are really alive.’ To me, the build-up to Christmas is just as exciting and meaningful, if not more, than Christmas itself: an important opportunity to awaken my senses and feel intensely grateful and alive.

Don’t you think it’s ironic that this period of spiritual foreplay–traditionally called ‘Advent’, from the Latin word for ‘coming toward’- takes place during what is the busiest season of the year for most women? Instead of pausing and reflecting, we get caught up in end-of-the-year deadlines, family obligations and endless shopping lists. How easy to lose yourself in all that stress!

And so, in order to ‘make Christmas sexy again’, I created a digital twist on one of my favorite childhood rituals: my own Advent(urous) Calendar. Instead of plastic toys and chocolates, I will share sexy secrets, inspirational quotes and delicious deals. A daily ritual to bring you back to your sensual self and rediscover the reason for the season: love, lots of it, starting with self-love!

Discover my Advent(urous) Calendar for 12 days of lusty indulgence in the run-up to Christmas. It will be our sexy little secret…

In January, I presented my newest FW20 collection during a show full of dance and entertainment in Rotterdam. All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses, powerful female icons from past and present. And for FW20, my muse will be crime writer Agatha Christie. A few months from now, you will get to discover the collections, and see how they tell stories like Agatha’s thrilling books do..

With his many bestselling books and columns – and yes, even his own theatre show – he urges us to think outside the box when it comes to our mental health. Not crazy about popping pills? Bram shared some interesting alternatives with me, from throwing out our phones to running ‘till we puke’.
