Release your inner alfa!

by Marlies Dekkers
My Gloria collection is designed for ladies taking the lead. This collection is inspired by the gangster movie “Gloria” (1980) directed by John Cassavetes.

I remember watching this movie for the first time. I was young and eager, looking for ways to express myself as a woman – in a unique but also powerful way. Back then, I didn’t have too many role models. Until the day I discovered Gloria. I can still feel the satisfaction of finally seeing a female lead (Gena Rowland) portrayed as strong and dominant, instead of dependent and obedient. By being the first “godmother” amongst a group of gangster, Gloria helped defying social clichés about women. For this collection I linked Gloria’s strength to the concept of power suits. In my design I translated this into powerful pinstripe patterns and macho suspender straps.

Trying to become a Maestro!

For a television program I am competing with 8 other Dutch personalities to become THE “Maestro”. The last few weeks have been nerve wrecking; I found my new passion.

My week; an inside look

I never have a week with a same sort of agenda as the week before, or the week ahead. That’s because I sometimes live the life of four different people.
