I believe a girl can never have too many bras
From the moment I start designing a bra until it is actually in the stores, takes about three years. The high quality standards and design techniques of marlies|dekkers lingerie need a development time like no other lingerie brand.
My inspiration for a new collection always comes from a strong woman of today or the past, who inspires me. To maximize the design process I need to completely immerse myself in the new theme. I then breathe, eat and sleep this theme before I can start with the designs. I often become infatuated with theme and start preparing my closet for the lingerie which is coming within a few years. By the moment the collection is finished, my closet is filled with clothes matching that particular collection.
The Style Collection has been conceived for the woman who regards her lingerie as an integral part of every ensemble. Every morning after I have finished my morning rituals of working-out and enjoying an oatmeal breakfast; the next stop is my closet. The first stop is my lingerie department. Since I am a women who regards my lingerie as an integral part of my outfit – I start with a lingerie “questionnaire”. How do I feel today? Sexy, sensual, casual, bright, dark, calm, energetic? Fun choices I need to make before I can decide upon the perfect lingerie set for that day. I can then move onto the rest of my outfit, where the most important question is: what complements my lingerie best!
Maybe it’s not the order you are used to, but choosing my lingerie carefully and making sure it fits my mood, gives me extra energy and makes me feel beautiful – ready to conquer the world (or just ready to handle that day)!
In bed with Arianne
As far as I am concerned, there is only one heiress to Edith Head’s throne, and that is the magnificent Arianne Phillips (53), twice Oscar-nominated costume designer and Madonna’s favorite style-collaborator. Like Edith, she is a tastemaker and visionary in both film and fashion. And just like her legendary predecessor, she is a feminist icon in her own right. I had the rare chance to interview Arianne and ask her about Madonna, feminism in Hollywood and why she thinks lingerie is ‘everything’. “We definitely do NOT like to hide it!”
Where the ‘queen of cups’ meets the ‘dress doctor’
In art school, many years ago during a nude model drawing class, I had a life changing insight: What if I, as an artist, used a woman’s body as my canvas? If you make a painting, someone will hang it on their wall. If you design a chair, someone will sit on it. But if you design lingerie, someone will wear it, and by doing so, complete your art! I had found my mission.
My couture collection – a cross between magic and camouflage
All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses. Powerful female icons from past and present. Although women have been marginalized for centuries, archetypes of female power have always been there. Through my designs, I bring them to you. To help us shape the world of modern-day feminism.
“You can have anything in life if you dress for it” – Edith Head
Fabulous words, and they could easily have been mine, but it was the legendary Edith Head – one of Hollywood’s most iconic designers – who said this many decades ago.
