A walk in closet for your swimwear?

by Marlies Dekkers

No, it’s not some Imelda Marcos-type fantasy; I have one in my house! A full closet, with all my bikinis and bathingsuits colour coordinated. On top of that, each set is organized with matching hat, pareo and beach bag. Heavenly. I collected every swimwear item I’ve ever designed and stored it there, so the in closet doubles as an archive for my brand. But still, how wonderfully extravagant?

Going through my collection, I’m proud of each design, but some just jump out. These are my three current favorites:

1. Holi Vintage red/ecru bathing suit
A spontaneous handstand on the beach? 30 push ups by the pool? No problem, this bathingsuit’s got me covered. Quite literally, since nothing escapes from this great fit! The cut, combined with the clever interplay of the Breton stripes, also has a very shaping effect. In the shops now, but already a design classic. If I may say so myself.

2. Flic Flac push up bikini
How sexy and glamorous is this bikini? As a matter of fact, I like to wear the top as a bra, and flash a bit of wetlook silver from underneath my clothes. Did you know that my swimwear has exactly the same quality and comfort as my lingerie? So go ahead, and switch them up! (The only thing I don’t recommend, is swimming in my lingerie. Sturdy as the fabrics are, chlorine is a harsh chemical..) The bottoms -6cm brazilian briefs- come back every season and are sheer perfection; plenty of coverage, without compromising on sexiness.

3. Safari Bikini
I didn’t realize how much this bikini looked like the stunning white number Ursula Andress wore in Dr No till I saw the original at the impressive ‘Designing 007’-exposition at Rotterdam’s Kunsthal (with matching toolbelt!) I see my Safari Bikini as the jungle version of the iconic Bond-bikini, including playful bullet holders on the shoulder straps. Perfect for when I want to release my inner Lara Croft.

From the Erasmus Bridge and the Mercedes-Benz Museum to Qatar’s metro network; Ben van Berkel’s iconic landmarks bring people together in rapturous beauty, again and again. I talked with the Dutch architect and educator about sensuality, ‘healthy’ buildings and the remarkable parallels between our designs.

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

Super (skin) food

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
