100% that goddess

100% that goddess

A few years back, Rihanna posted a picture of her latest tattoo: the Egyptian goddess Isis, spreading her magnificent wings under the singer’s breasts. “Goddess Isis – Complete Woman – Model for future generations,” the badass singer wrote.

Rewind 2000 years, and you can witness Cleopatra presiding over a ceremony dressed resplendently as Isis, aka ‘The Lady of the Holy Cobra’ who was as fearsome and protective as the two formidable snakes she danced with. Cleopatra identified with the goddess, had statues erected of herself in her image, and as far as the Egyptians were concerned, Cleopatra WAS the goddess. Isis, the deity of many things: of magic, fertility, motherhood, but also war and death. The mistress of healing and rebirth, like a brilliantly-colored snake shedding its skin. She was Demeter, Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite all rolled into one. And in that sense, not much different from Cleopatra herself, who was high priest, queen, mother, chief executive officer and goddess to boot.

Perhaps that is the reason Isis still speaks to us today, a generation of women like Rihanna who shamelessly claim the right to rise from their ashes and ‘have it all’. Or, to use the words of another badass singer: the right to be 100% that goddess!

From the Erasmus Bridge and the Mercedes-Benz Museum to Qatar’s metro network; Ben van Berkel’s iconic landmarks bring people together in rapturous beauty, again and again. I talked with the Dutch architect and educator about sensuality, ‘healthy’ buildings and the remarkable parallels between our designs.

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
