I believe in challenges

by Marlies Dekkers
From a young age I’ve done all kinds of sports. I’m an active person who likes to challenge myself. But I came to the shocking conclusion that I used to sport like a girl…

When I saw male sporters, I knew I could never become as strong as they are. But I never had a female rolemodel who gave me the right example or challenged me to take it to the next level. I honestly always thought my sport level was above average. In my carreer I always aim for more, but in sports I was satisfied with what I was doing. Or, was I running away for difficulties? Scared? Where was the fighter mentality I normally have in everything I do?
Then, the right challengers came across. High level fitness became more popular than ever for women and true rolemodels arose. There came more female personal trainers and I got inspired by their power and motivation. I noticed that I never discovered how far I could go, how strong and fit I could become… I used to sport like a girl.

I really got my wake-up call. I found out I could do far more and I set new goals. Within a few weeks I became much stronger. On Instagram I follow a lot of female sport rolemodels. They are extremely dedicated and they keep inspiring me. I scroll down their pictures daily which gives me a bigger smile when my personal trainer arrives to exceed my boundaries again.

In January, I presented my newest FW20 collection during a show full of dance and entertainment in Rotterdam. All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses, powerful female icons from past and present. And for FW20, my muse will be crime writer Agatha Christie. A few months from now, you will get to discover the collections, and see how they tell stories like Agatha’s thrilling books do..

With his many bestselling books and columns – and yes, even his own theatre show – he urges us to think outside the box when it comes to our mental health. Not crazy about popping pills? Bram shared some interesting alternatives with me, from throwing out our phones to running ‘till we puke’.
