Close your eyes

Close your eyes

by marlies|dekkers

Exactly 30 years ago, during the booming club scene of the late 80s and early 90s, my brand marlies|dekkers was born. To this day, I am inspired by the freedom, joy and radical self-acceptance I experienced in those dark, throbbing clubs. You can imagine how much I love festivals like Burning Man. They bring that same energy into the light, exposing it to the elements: the scorching sun, the dust, the desert sky. And of course the fires, the same ones that gave Burning Man its name. Awakening all your senses at once, the flames stoke your imagination, urging you to be shameless in your self-expression. Want to look like a neon goddess, a slutty angel or go gloriously butt naked? Go ahead; create art, be art! Yes, they will all be ashes soon – the crazy art installations, the outlandish costumes, the entire Black Rock City – but you’re in the here and now, living, breathing, dancing, making love. Together. Carpe diem! Afterwards, you look up at the starry sky, inhaling the desert scent, feeling the night air on your skin. And you realize that even though the festival is gone without a trace, it’s still there. Burning within you.

With the Festival edition of my Awaken Your Senses collections, I want to share this fire with you. Can you hear the desert calling? It’s time to celebrate the 30th anniversary of marlies|dekkers together. To celebrate you. Let’s dance and fan the flames of our desires. Let’s get shamelessly sensual. We don’t need permission to express ourselves. The sun, moon and stars are our lovers. Excuse us while we kiss the sky.

From the Erasmus Bridge and the Mercedes-Benz Museum to Qatar’s metro network; Ben van Berkel’s iconic landmarks bring people together in rapturous beauty, again and again. I talked with the Dutch architect and educator about sensuality, ‘healthy’ buildings and the remarkable parallels between our designs.

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

Super (skin) food

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
