My Beliefs

by Marlies Dekkers
My story starts with a motto. A motto which I have for more than 20 years. It has always inspired me but most of all I want to inspire others with my saying; dare to dream, dare to grow, dare to be.

As a feminist, I believe in supporting other women to follow their own path in life. It begins with discovering your path, which is built upon your own beliefs. My motto is the fundament for my beliefs. They are formed over the years. My motto and beliefs together are my life guide, the bricks of my rules and decisions.

I believe all women are beautiful
I believe the women body is the greatest natural canvass
I believe in the freedom of self-expression; the freedom to be as you choose
I believe in a world where women and men are treated and regarded equally
I believe in enhancing self-confidence among women
I believe in encouraging women to feel as beautiful, as sensual and desirable as they believe themselves to be
I believe in the importance of creativity in the pursuit of happiness
I believe all women are masters of their own destiny

I put my beliefs in everything I do. I’m so proud to see more and more rolemodels express their thoughts of life. Nowadays you find those rolemodels in all different disciplines. Think about leading ladies such as Hillary Clinton or Angela Merkel. Or film directors Sophia Coppola and Naomi Kwase, architects Zaha Hadid and Susana Torre. Or find your rolemodel in sporters as Lisa Leslie or Nadia Comeneci. And not to forget about Madonna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga. Fantastic examples of ladies who live their beliefs.

Don’t underestimate how your beliefs can help you in life, but can also inspires many others. In the next weeks I will tell you more about how mine guides me through life.

In January, I presented my newest FW20 collection during a show full of dance and entertainment in Rotterdam. All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses, powerful female icons from past and present. And for FW20, my muse will be crime writer Agatha Christie. A few months from now, you will get to discover the collections, and see how they tell stories like Agatha’s thrilling books do..
