La casa AZUL

La casa AZUL

Of all the vibrant colors Frida used in her paintings, blue conveyed her deepest emotions. “Cobalt blue is electricity and purity. It’s love,” the Mexican painter wrote in her journal.

Very fittingly, the house where Frida was born in 1907, where she lived with her great love Diego Rivera and where she died at 47, stands out for its cobalt blue walls. ‘Frida and Diego lived in this house 1929–1954’ is written on the façade of the ‘La Casa Azul’ (‘The Blue House’) and so the lovers did, through good times and bad times.

And every time her heart was broken, Frida painted. Like her self-portrait ‘Memory, the Heart’ (1937), in which the blood of her shattered heart is washed away by the endless blue sea.
