This season, I celebrate the colorful life and art of Frida Kahlo, Mexican painter, feminist heroine, selfie-queen avant la lettre. In her raw, sensual self-portraits Frida used sheer virtuosity to turn her personal pain into universal art, piercing your soul with her unflinching eyes. Frida suffered a lifetime of pain, her body weakened by polio and a horrific traffic accident, her heart broken again and again by the love of her life. But with every stroke of her brush she transformed her vulnerability into strength. Just look at how she painted her eyebrows: like the wings of a blackbird to highlight her unusual beauty in a single movement. Celebrating what made her different, without shame, without apologies.
