Art from the heart

Art from the heart

by Marlies Dekkers
I was invited to make a contribution for a charity auction. They asked me to take pictures of things that I love deeply. The result would be a unique piece of art reflecting my heart.

As a mother and a daughter the choice what I would create was easily made. I wanted to capture the eyes of the two most important women in my life: my daughter and my mother. On top of that, I also photographed my own eyes, creating a picture that embodies three generations of “Dekkers empowerment”. The eyes of my daughter Zilver and mine are framing a delicate, little but o so important message: dare to grow, dare to explore, dare to trust. It’s our little power mantra.

The result was amazing. I couldn’t think of a more beautiful and more loving donation for this good cause. But, I also couldn’t imagine not having that beautiful piece of art hanging on my own wall! So the best thing to do was to be the highest bidder myself. Every morning I wake up looking at their faces, feeling so lucky to love and to be loved by such amazing women. The best art truly is art from the heart.

In January, I presented my newest FW20 collection during a show full of dance and entertainment in Rotterdam. All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses, powerful female icons from past and present. And for FW20, my muse will be crime writer Agatha Christie. A few months from now, you will get to discover the collections, and see how they tell stories like Agatha’s thrilling books do..
