My muse Gaia – the original Big Mama

by marlies|dekkers

All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses. Powerful female icons from past and present. Although women have been marginalized for centuries, archetypes of female power have always been there. Through my designs, I bring them to you. To help us shape the world of modern-day feminism.

This season, we return to the womb of Mother Earth to honor all her marvelous creations and celebrate the miracle of life. In her manifestation as a formidable Greek goddess, Mother Earth made first herself – literally becoming the first self–made woman! – after which she birthed the earth and all its wild beauty. The ultimate source of raw, maternal power, she was worshipped in caves and by springs where her life-giving water burst forth like milk from breasts or menstrual blood. The Greeks called her Gaia: the one we are born from and fed by, but also the one we return to when we die. The original Big Mama

Not only are we part of Mother Earth; she is also part of us. The water in our flesh, the calcium our bones; Mother Earth is in each of our cells. Can you hear her calling you, deep from within? She is urging you to feel the earth beneath your feet and connect to your ancient creative powers. “Dare to dream, dare to grow, dare to be”, she whispers. And as you launch yourself upon the world to fulfill your potential, Gaia will guide you. Guarding the equilibrium, she will correct you when your break her laws of nature. Let Mother Earth carry you. So that you can let your juices flow and flourish in all the colors of the rainbow.

My new Couture Collection is an ode to the original Superwoman: Gaia. Channel your inner Earth Goddess in this rainbow-colored celebration of nature’s wild and wonderful creations. Wrap your curves in playful layers and a mesmerizing mix of Mother Earth–inspired prints that help remind you: you are divine, a force of nature.

Wear my spectacular ‘Gaia’ collection and watch the earth burst into bloom.

From the Erasmus Bridge and the Mercedes-Benz Museum to Qatar’s metro network; Ben van Berkel’s iconic landmarks bring people together in rapturous beauty, again and again. I talked with the Dutch architect and educator about sensuality, ‘healthy’ buildings and the remarkable parallels between our designs.

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

Super (skin) food

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
