I believe in following your dreams

by Marlies Dekkers
Success never comes easy. There are down, and when you are lucky, many more ups. For me, following my dreams and trying build my brand never came easy. It wasn’t only the talent that brought me where I am today, but my dedication, focus and believe in myself.

I regularly look back at the working class in which I grew up. It was a loving environment but it can hardly be seen as the provider of the ingredients for a guaranteed success story. As from early on I dared to dream, but dreaming wasn’t something ordinary where I came from. Where others got stimulated to study the expectations for me as a woman, my parents just wanted me to become happy. They assumed I would be happy when being a housewife instead of an artist. Regardless I decided to follow my dream and subscribed myself at the Art Academy. Starting out I might not have been the most creative, smart or the most promising student, but my vision was clear! I gave myself some goals and didn’t aim too high, taking it step by step. I found my motivation in myself instead of my environment and I was proud when I achieved my own goals. Each time, it gave me the guts to take the next step. I got addicted to acquiring knowledge and I followed additional courses to feed myself mentally.

A few years later I graduated Cum Laude, being the most promising graduated young artist.

My hard work has brought me where I am today. I made my decisions based upon my own vision on life. Dare to dream, keep some room for the unimaginable and you will see nothing is impossible.

In January, I presented my newest FW20 collection during a show full of dance and entertainment in Rotterdam. All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses, powerful female icons from past and present. And for FW20, my muse will be crime writer Agatha Christie. A few months from now, you will get to discover the collections, and see how they tell stories like Agatha’s thrilling books do..
