Spreading the (self-) love!

Spreading the (self-) love!

by marlies|dekkers

I live and breathe feminine feminism. With each of my designs, but also through a number of empowering side projects such as ‘The Self-Love Show’: a series of intimate, animated conversations on Instagram Live with feminine feminists from all walks of life. The subject? You guessed it, self-love! Because after all these years, I know one thing for sure: self-love is the key to unlocking potential. Your own potential, but also that of the women around you. So, let’s inspire each other! Let’s lift each other up! Here are some nuggets of self-love wisdom to get your started. Enjoy!

Entrepreneur & business coach Simone Levie:

“I didn’t know any other female entrepreneurs when I started my business 10 years ago. Now, with Instagram and Facebook, we share our insights and learnings and it causes a ripple-effect. Together, we show women everywhere: you can run a business and inspire others too. And we are allowed to do it differently than men! Women are different; they think differently and they act differently. Let’s accept that, and find our own kind of entrepreneurship. Let’s figure out how to do it the feminine way.”

Sex inspirator Linda de Munck:

“I was asked to review sex toys, so I have tried a whole lot of them. At first, I was hesitant; how would this affect my reputation? But it’s so important to break the taboo around sex toys. Until recently, people associated a dildo or vibrator with the image of a fifty-year-old woman who got left by her husband. But especially during puberty, when your hormones are racing, you feel such a strong urge to discover sex in any way possible. And so, you get creative: what do I have at home? It is my mission, especially for teenagers, to show that it’s normal to use a sex toy instead of grabbing a cucumber or zucchini.”

Lawyer Natacha Harlequin:

“When I was young, my mom often put me in front of a mirror. She wanted me to look at myself very closely. She would say “Look at you, look at your ears (I have very tiny ears), they are beautiful, right? And they complement your neck; you have a very long neck. And your nose matches your eyes very well, too”. She described me like that for years, almost like a mantra, and I started seeing myself in the same way. She was right to teach me: Love yourself! Know your favorite parts or features, and emphasize those.”

Hormone expert Vivian Reijs:

“A lot of women struggle to talk about hormones. Whether it’s teenagers being afraid to buy tampons, women struggling with fertility issues or extremely painful periods, or women going into menopause. We need to break the taboo around hormones to be able to learn about them. Looking at myself, for example, I have always had many symptoms of which I didn’t know they were hormone related. So many women have health problems and think “That’s just part of being a woman”. But it’s not! There are ways to balance those hormones.”

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

Super (skin) food

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
