Why Turning 50 Rocks!

by marlies|dekkers

I’m turning 50 tomorrow. Can you believe it, 50! I think you should push yourself at any age, but there is something about the big five-0 that’s special. Basically, you’re at the midpoint of your life; it’s literally your midlife. You have one Louboutin in the grave.

So when I turn 50 tomorrow, I’m ready for an “Awakening”.

“The Awakening”, is a short-film I created this year. It is raw and provocative, capturing my thoughts on modern day feminism. I envisioned and created the film in honor of women.  With this movie, I send a message to women all over the world; “Shed your old skin and free yourself from expectation; dare to take a bite from the apple.”

Together we can disarm the stereotypes that for far too long have misled our societies; that we (women) don’t have the skills, intelligence or the guts to accomplish. All we need is females thinking forward: women who understand that equality isn’t dependent on external factors; something passively received or violently acquired.

Women, who train their minds so that they feel powerful themselves. Women, who feel, think and radiate confidence. Not against, but in partnership with men. Ultimately we give progress to ourselves. We are the third movement; females moving forward.

The one gift I ask for, above all else, for my 50th Birthday is that you take the time to view “The Awakening” and share my movie with all the women you know.

Let’s collectively free ourselves from expectation and dare ourselves to take a bite from that apple!

In January, I presented my newest FW20 collection during a show full of dance and entertainment in Rotterdam. All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses, powerful female icons from past and present. And for FW20, my muse will be crime writer Agatha Christie. A few months from now, you will get to discover the collections, and see how they tell stories like Agatha’s thrilling books do..

Dr. Bram Bakker is a psychiatrist, a writer, a runner and a provocateur. With his many bestselling books and columns – and yes, even his own theatre show – he urges us to think outside the box when it comes to our mental health. Not crazy about popping pills? Bram shared some interesting alternatives with me, from throwing out our phones to running ‘till we puke’.
