Dare to keep secrets
American freedom fighter Harriet Tubman was tiny - barely five feet tall - but became a larger-than-life legend by freeing hundreds of enslaved people as a military strategist and a Civil War spy. "There was one of two things I had a right to, liberty, or death," the formidable feminist and abolitionist once said. "If I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive." Yes, Harriet was incredibly brave and had amazing leadership skills. But she also shared an important trait with many other female spies: taking advantage of society's underestimation of women, she mastered the art of operating unseen, a mistress of secrets.
Born in bondage in 1822, Harriet was taken away from her mother to work at only six years old. Even though she got beaten so badly that she would suffer seizures for the rest of her life, one thing could never be beaten out of her: her conviction that all beings - male or female, black or white - had the right to be free. "God set the North Star in the heavens," she said later. "He gave me the strength in my limbs; He meant I should be free." Using the stars as her compass, she escaped into the night. Using her invisibility to hone her spy skills - who would pay attention to a poor, black woman? - Harriet masterminded dozens of rescue missions with the intelligence she had gathered. The tiny powerhouse would lead an estimated 800 enslaved people to freedom, earning her the nickname 'Moses'.
Already famous during her lifetime, Harriet Tubman became a historical icon after her death, her face gracing movie posters, coins, stamps etc. (There's even a Harriet Tubman $20 bill in the works). Ironically, the 'invisible' spy has turned into a bright-shining Northern Star, a symbol of hope, faith and the power of secrets.
