Female gardeners, Gardenista

Female gardeners, Gardenista

by Marlies Dekkers

All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses. Powerful female icons from past and present. Although women have been marginalized for centuries, archetypes of female power have always been there. Through my designs, I bring them to you. To help us shape the world of modern-day feminism.

This season, we get our fingers dirty in style, guided by the phenomenal women who dared to create their own Gardens of Eden. From Greek garden goddesses to Victorian horticultural heroes; from Medieval weeding women to Insta plant celebs; these 'gardening angels' show us how to collab with Mother Earth to create beauty, using flowers and plants as paint, and soil and sky as canvas. They urge us to turn our backs on rigid rationality - like the Romantics did during the early 19th century - and reconnect with our wild nature. They dare us to dig in.

A garden, like most things, starts with a vision. You plant a seed, you plant hope; you dare to dream. A radical act of optimism, especially for someone like Victorian gardener Gertrude Jekyll. Now known as one of the greatest horticulturists of all time - male or female! - she was already losing her sight when she first started gardening. A few decades later, best-selling baroness Vita Sackville-West nourished her dreams and seeds with love, sweat and a willingness to fail and learn. By daring to grow, she created the ultimate English garden that is on every garden lover's bucket list. And now, a new generation of gardenistas expresses itself on balconies and windowsills, proving that you don't need a big plot of land to dare to be. If you dig deep enough to unearth your dreams, and you are persistent enough to nurse them through the seasons, then you can flourish, wherever you have taken root. Because you have shown: you are a force of (cultivated) nature.

My 'Gardenista' Couture Collection was inspired by the iconic denim dungarees worn by gardeners and feminists alike. I crafted a playful, yet sensual silhouette, and selected a jeans-print and rivets to make it look just like the real deal. The bold brown straps, bib buckles and front pocket are giving 100% 'gardenista' chic, while the motto printed on the lining of the bottoms - 'Let your garden reveal yourself' - inspires you to express yourself, within and beyond your garden walls.

From the Erasmus Bridge and the Mercedes-Benz Museum to Qatar’s metro network; Ben van Berkel’s iconic landmarks bring people together in rapturous beauty, again and again. I talked with the Dutch architect and educator about sensuality, ‘healthy’ buildings and the remarkable parallels between our designs.

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

Super (skin) food

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
