Throwback Thursday: Nicki Minaj in Dame de Paris

Throwback Thursday: Nicki Minaj in Dame de Paris

by Kiki Atwaroe

She refers to herself as a Barbie Bitch, The Mistress, The First Lady of Young Money, and Nicki the Boss. These nicknames complete the alter egos she comes up with as she promotes her new album, performs on stage, and appears on talk shows for interviews. As we look back on her cover shoot for Allure Magazine wearing our Dame de Paris in white, we are well aware that Nicki is not just a performer but a strong business woman.

Nicki is this era’s Female Forward role model and owns her sexuality in all her alter egos. Her music is influenced by our 90s stars Missy Elliot, Cyndi Lauper and super sexual charged Lil’ Kim, Madonna, Beyoncé, and Britney Spears. Often a resemblance has been made with these artists however Nicki is still unique in her own successful ways. As she heads towards ending her 3rd tour promoting her latest album The PinkPrint, she never takes a break from working. Endorsements with well-known brands such as MAC Cosmetics, starring in The Other Woman, voice-over for the animation Ice Age: Continental Drift makes this woman unstoppable. She has always seen making music as a platform to expand her business, and she did!

The Trinidad and Tobago born superstar loves to play with her look to match her alter egos. The colorful bubbly character with a cartoon like voice resonates well with her younger fans and her sexy and strong characters compliments women worldwide. She shows the world that women are allowed to explore themselves, play with their look and have fun doing it. The looks that she drums up for her appearances are created with the help of fake wigs, lashes and nails but the wisdom that she spreads out to the world are 100% real.

In January, I presented my newest FW20 collection during a show full of dance and entertainment in Rotterdam. All my work as a feminist designer is inspired by muses, powerful female icons from past and present. And for FW20, my muse will be crime writer Agatha Christie. A few months from now, you will get to discover the collections, and see how they tell stories like Agatha’s thrilling books do..
