Dare to take a bite out of life!

Dare to take a bite out of life!

by Marlies Dekkers

When God created us, he put us first in a garden: the Garden of Eden (which, I suppose, made Eve and Adam the first gardeners!). After we got banned for eating the Forbidden Fruit - not an apple but a juicy pomegranate, according to scholars - we would forever try to recreate paradise: our own Garden of Earthly Delights.

To this day, no matter where; in communal gardens, backyards and balcony corners - as soon as a woman activates her natural-born creative powers to cultivate plants, she builds a little piece of heaven. This is where we slow down, surrender to the seasons and awaken our senses. Where we feel the interconnectedness of all things. No wonder bad-ass 12th century nun and horticulturist Hildegard von Bingen had her greatest insight while working in her garden. The divine is not above all things, she realized, but alive inside every leaf, flower and apple.

More than 800 years later, we can feel the same sensual energy coursing through our veins when we squat in our garden, our fingers rubbing the rich soil. We taste it when we bite into a crisp, freshly picked apple, its sweet juices running down our chin. Yes, this is our own Garden of Eden, where anything is possible, and nothing is forbidden. So go ahead, take that bite!

From the Erasmus Bridge and the Mercedes-Benz Museum to Qatar’s metro network; Ben van Berkel’s iconic landmarks bring people together in rapturous beauty, again and again. I talked with the Dutch architect and educator about sensuality, ‘healthy’ buildings and the remarkable parallels between our designs.

More than a feeling

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

Super (skin) food

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
