Lagertha, my Women’s Day warrior

Lagertha, my Women’s Day warrior

by Marlies Dekkers

Did you know that Lagertha, my kick-ass Viking heroine and style icon, isn’t just a character in a tv series*? She is an actual historic figure!

This is what they said about her in a 12th-century Danish history book: “Lagertha, though a maiden, had the courage of a man. She fought in front among the bravest. Only her locks flying down her back betrayed that she was a woman.”

I love her story so much that I chose Lagertha to honor on Women’s Day. Her image, a woman warrior, beautiful as a goddess, long hair flowing, sword dripping with blood, has also been my inspiration for the couture set: Earl Lagertha.

With the name, I refer to a specific period in Lagertha’s life. When her second husband (sexually) abused her, Lagertha defended her honour by stabbing him in the eye and getting the guy killed. To finish the job, she took his land and his title and became Earl Lagertha. Speaking of a well-deserved hostile takeover!

For the stunning Earl Lagertha lingerie set I combined feminine lace with leather stirrups as a reference to Lagertha’s excellent horse riding skills. The result is sexy and empowering; the hardcore meets the gentle. Or as Björk, another Nordic heroine of mine, likes to call it: big time sensuality!

Don’t ignore your emotions; they are much more powerful than you can imagine. By linking the magical world of emotions with hard science, Dutch scientist Pierre Capel, professor emeritus in experimental immunology, shows us the consequences of our feelings and the power of our minds. The message: we can do much more than we think. “Meditate. It’s the single best thing you can do for your health.”

The fact that I feel bikini-confident all year round is, of course, a nice bonus. But for me, the biggest payoff of following the keto diet is the way it optimizes my health and gives me tons of energy.

Super (skin) food

‘If you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin?’. I pretty much live by this beauty adage. After all, with your skin being one of your body’s largest organs, anything – and I mean anything! – you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream.
